چکیده

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious transient sources. If extragalactic, as suggested by their relative large dispersion measures, their brightness temperatures must be extremely high. Some FRB models (e.g., young pulsar model, magnetar giant flare model, or supra-massive neutron star collapse model) suggest that they may be associated with a synchrotron nebula. Here we study a synchrotron-heating process by an FRB in a self-absorbed synchrotron nebula. If the FRB frequency is below the synchrotron self-absorption frequency of the nebula, electrons in the nebula would absorb FRB photons, leading to a harder electron spectrum and enhanced selfabsorbed synchrotron emission. In the meantime, the FRB flux is absorbed by the nebula electrons. We calculate the spectra of FRB-heated synchrotron nebulae, and show that the nebula spectra would show a significant hump in several decades near the self-absorption frequency. Identifying such a spectral feature would reveal an embedded FRB in a synchrotron nebula.

The plerion nebula in IC 443: the XMM-Newton view

XMM-Newton observations of the X-ray feature 1SAX J0617.1+2221 in the IC 443 supernova remnant are reported. We resolve the structure of the nebula into a compact core with a hard spectrum of photon index γ = 1.63 −0.10 in the 2–10 keV energy range. The nebula also has an extended (∼ 8 × 5) X-ray halo, much larger than the radio emission extension. The photon index softens, following a linear s...

The cyclo–synchrotron process and particle heating through the absorption of photons

Aims. We propose a new approximation for the cyclo–synchrotron emissivity of a single electron. In the second part of this work, we discuss a simple application for our approximation, and investigate the heating of electrons through the self–absorption process. Finally, we investigate the self–absorbed part of the spectrum produced by a power–law population of electrons. Methods. In comparison ...

Implications of the synchrotron emission in plerionic nebulae: a second component in the Crab Nebula

High-quality spatially resolved spectra of synchrotron emission from plerions represent a powerful diagnostic tool for the physical conditions in these objects. A fundamental question is to what extent spatial variations of the synchrotron spectrum originate from the evolution of a single population of injected electrons, and when instead they imply the coexistence of different populations of e...

Non-thermal X-ray and Radio Emission from the Snr N 157b

The supernova remnant N 157B contains a pulsar and three distinct synchrotron components with rather unusual properties. 1) A somewhat irregular elliptical pulsar wind nebula (PWN) visible in both X-ray and radio wavelengths. The nebula is quite symmetrical with an extent of about 10 × 5 parsecs but offset along the long axis by about 4 pc from the pulsar position. It is apparently the result o...
